The Gannon University women’s lacrosse team has covered some ground over the past month, compiling a 2-5 mark that left the team with an overall record of 3-5 and a 2-4 record in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action.
The highlight of the stretch came on March 17 when Kat Martinelli scored the game-winning goal with 26 seconds left in Gannon’s 11-10 road victory over Shippensburg.
In the Knights’ most recent game, which came Saturday on the road, they absorbed a 20-3 loss to West Chester.
Alexa Bower contributed two of the three goals and Jayme Kostial added one in a game that was moved up by two hours due to the weather.
Goalie Erin Renwick allowed 20 goals but did record 13 saves.
Previous to that, on April 3, the Knights battled against rival Mercyhurst University but fell 19-6 at McConnell Family Stadium.
Erin Rotondo recorded a hat trick, but Mercyhurst started off scoring eight goals and the Lakers were never seriously threatened. Micaela Capozzo, Bower and Maddie Krock each contributed a goal in addition to Rotondo’s hat trick.
On March 31, Gannon fell 14-8 to Kutztown University. The Knights did have a 6-3 lead at one point, but Kutztown followed up with 11 goals and controlled the game from there on.
Capozzo recorded a hat trick with three goals. Kayla Shields and Rotondo each collected two goals. Renwick allowed 14 goals and recorded 12 saves.
On March 28, Gannon traveled over to Edinboro University and came back with a 15-2 win. Leilani King and Rotondo led the team with five goals each. Bower and Caroline Mauck also contributed two goals each. Renwick only allowed two goals and recorded 12 saves.
On March 24, the Knights absorbed a 15-8 loss at home against Lock Haven University. The Bald Eagles took an early lead and the Knights could not recover.
Rotondo contributed a hat trick. King added an additional goal, as did Mauck and Capozzo. Renwick recorded 11 saves.
A week earlier, the Knights netted their last-minute win over host Shippensburg University on Martinelli’s goal with 26 seconds remaining.
Other Gannon goals came from Jessica Hudak, King, Rotondo and Bower. Renwick recorded 15 saves.
The Knights will return to action at 4 p.m. Wednesday at home against Indiana University of Pennsylvania and then will entertain East Stroudsburg at 1 p.m. Saturday at McConnell Family Stadium.
