Swimming and diving falls to Canisius on Senior Day

The Gannon University men’s and women’s swim teams came up short in their bids to send their seniors out on a winning note as both squads lost to Canisius on Senior Night Friday at the Carneval Athletic Pavilion pool.
The Knights’ men’s team dropped a 136-84 decision while the women were defeated 136-78.
Multiple seniors on both teams were honored before the meet. The women’s team recognized McKenna Haskins, Jessica Ott, Meghan Terwilliger and Makayla Williams.
The men’s team saluted Cole Davis, Noah Donovan and Michael Weiser. All seven performers received a special honor before the meets began.
Once the action started, the men’s team had three first-place finishes in the meet.
Bryce Ebel took first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4 minutes, 48.95 seconds and the 1,000 freestyle (9:58.20). Thomas Marshall took first in the 100 free (48.10).
It was the third victory this season in each of those events for Ebel and Marshall.
The women had three first-place finishes including two relays.
Terwilliger capped her dual-meet career for Gannon by taking first in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:13.06.
Terwilliger also took part in the victorious 400 medley relay effort, teaming with Samantha Favret, Marissa Scott and Silvija Taraska to win the event with a time of 4:06.02.
In the 200 freestyle relay, the team of Favret, Courtney Hubert, Ashley Rega and Taraska took first, finishing with a time of 1:41.40.
The Gannon men also recorded 13 more qualifying times for the upcoming Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships, which will be held next month.
The Gannon women, meanwhile, posted eight more PSAC qualifying times in the loss to Canisius.
The latest women’s qualifiers were Taraska in the 500 free (24.72), Rory Lingg in the 50 free (25.39), Rega in the 50 free (25.48), Hubert in the 100 free (55.33), Favret in the 200 backstroke (2:13.06), Scott in the 200 breaststroke (2:33.05), Lilijah Taraska in the 200 breaststroke (22:33.06) and Terwilliger in the 200 butterfly (2:13.06).
The men’s qualifying list included several swimmers who made the grade in multiple events. Ebel qualified in both the 500 free (4:48.95) and 1,000 free (9:58.20) while Marshall qualified in both the 100 free (48.10) and 200 free (1:45.20).
Others posting two qualifying marks Friday were Clark Eason in the 50 free (4:48.95) and 100 free (48.10) and Luke Engel in the 200 free (1:48.40) and the 100 free (48.87).
Several other swimmers qualified for one event Friday. Weiser earned a spot in the 50 free (21.98), Jake Rehrer qualified for the 50 free (22.75), Allan Collins made it in the 200 back (1:57.26), Zachary Werstler made the mark in the 200 butterfly (1:58.99) and Davis posted a qualifying time in the 200 butterfly (1:58.99).
Both teams will take a short intermission to prepare for the PSAC Championships. The four-day meet will be held Feb. 21-24 in York.
