Progress report for all Gannon sports: Feb. 25-March 2

Women’s basketball (11-1): The 12th-ranked Knights recorded two wins over the weekend against Saint Rose, 62-56 Saturday and 61-47 Sunday. Sam Pirosko scored 38 points in the two games combined to lead the team in scoring. Gannon will close out its season with two games against rival Mercyhurst Wednesday and Saturday.

Men’s basketball (9-3): After a 9-1 start, the Knights dropped their last two games. They lost to Salem on Wednesday, 54-53, and to Mercyhurst on Saturday, 73-66. Gannon wraps up its season Thursday against IUP.

Men’s wrestling (0-1, competed five times): The Knights dominated the NCAA Super Region 1, finishing first among six teams. Six wrestlers were individual champions – Charlie Lenox (125), Jacob Dunlop (133), Austin Hertel (141), Nick Young (157), Cameron Page (184) and Freddie Nixon (285). Alex Farenchak (165) and Joel Leise (197) both received at-large bids to nationals.

These eight wrestlers will compete at the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships March 12-13 in St. Louis.

Men’s swimming and diving (2-1): Gannon competed in the PSAC Invitational along with the IUP Last Chance Invitational Saturday. Stephen McCallum qualified for nationals in the 200-yard freestyle and 100 free. Chris Luus qualified in the 100 free and 100 back. The NCAA Division II championships will be held March 17-20.

Women’s swimming and diving (1-2): Gannon competed in the PSAC Invitational along with the IUP Last Chance Invitational on Saturday. Silvija Taraska qualified for nationals in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle.

Men’s water polo (7-2): After defeating Salem and Mount St. Mary’s in the first two games of the MAWPC-West tournament, the Knights fell, 21-8, in the championship match to McKendree. Gannon will now enter the MAWPC Conference tournament, which will start Saturday.

Women’s volleyball (3-0): Gannon upset No. 1 Hillsdale Saturday, 3-1.

Men’s soccer (0-1): Gannon lost to Ashland, 1-0, Friday in an exhibition and followed that with another exhibition loss to Tiffin, 1-0, on Wednesday. The Knights’ next game is March 12 in Pittsburgh against Point Park.

Men’s cross country (competed once): The Knights finished in fourth place at Saturday’s Lock Haven Winter Invite with a team score of 99 points. Caleb Mandel was Gannon’s top finisher at 16th. Gannon will host the Gannon Invitational on March 13.

Women’s cross country (competed once): The Knights finished in second place at the Lock Haven Winter Invite on Saturday with a team score of 63 points. Meredith Morse finished in fourth place with a time of 18 minutes, 46.2 seconds.
