Quevedo does it with one swing

Junior Mauela Quevedo of the Gannon University women’s golf team accomplished the feat all golfers dream of doing and only a few are lucky enough to achieve.

On Thursday, Sept. 1, 2016, a date she will soon never forget, Quevedo recorded a hole-in-one on the 18th hole at Lake Shore Country Club right here in Erie.

This marks Quevedo’s first hole-in-one in 10 years. The last time she knocked one in in one stroke she was in her home country of Colombia.

Even before her recent achievement, Quevedo has been a standout for the Gannon women’s golf team during the last three years.

One of her accolades include being named to the PSAC second team last year after shooting an average of 82.2 strokes through 18 rounds.

She has been named a PSAC scholar-athlete and received the NCAA Division II Athletics Directors Association (ADA) Academic Achievement Award every year during her tenure at Gannon.

Last season, the Colombia native collected four top-five finishes, seven top-10 placements and nine top-20 finishes in 10 events. She has also shot in the 70s six times with a seasonal best of 74 at the Mercyhurst Spring Invitational and also at the final round of the Gannon Spring Invitational, where she won her first career title out of 29 golfers.

Quevedo has come close to winning other titles in previous outings, but ended up getting runner-up at the Clarion Invitational and Mercyhurst Spring Invitational. She also placed third at the Allegheny Invitational.

Now that Quevedo has two hole-in-one’s under her belt, she can relate to H.I. Phillips’ famous quote, “There are two reasons for making a hole-in-one, the first is that it is immensely labor-saving.”
