The Gannon University softball team traveled to Clermont, Fla., for spring break, and the Knights compiled a 6-5 record against 11 different opponents.
Among Gannon’s victories was a 4-2 season-opening victory over Notre Dame College of Ohio.
The victory was led by sophomore Jackie Martinez, who scored two runs, and senior Alexa Archambeault, who was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Gannon’s biggest offensive output of the week came in a 14-2 thrashing of Lake Superior State.
The game was completely controlled by the Knights, starting with a 5–2 first-inning lead. Archambeault had an outstanding game with four hits and five RBIs, and fellow senior Alyssa Bates contributed three runs, two hits and three RBIs.
The next afternoon had some new leaders on Gannon’s stat sheet as the Knights took on Salem and beat the Tigers, 5-1.
Several new faces played key roles in the win, as freshman Autumn Smith led the team with two hits and scored one run. On the mound freshman Kellyn Perich earned her first win with five strikeouts.
The Knights are on a quick break until they travel to Salem, Va., for five games scheduled for Friday and Saturday.
One of those matchups will be against Wheeling Jesuit, where the Knights will seek to avenge a 4-3 loss sustained last week in Florida.
Through 11 games, Martinez leads the team in hitting with a .379 average and Archambeault is at .345. Both players have six RBIs. Kherrin Morgan leads the team with nine RBIs.
Olivia Gumbita leads all pitchers with a 5-1 record and a 1.47 ERA with 31 strikeouts and eight walks in 31 innings of work.
