Nominations for the Excellence in Undergraduate Advising Award are available. Forms can be picked up at the Student Success Center. Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to nominate Gannon University undergraduate faculty advisers who have demonstrated the qualities of an exceptional academic adviser. A committee will select one faculty adviser from each college. Recipients will receive a certificate, monetary award, and a one-year membership to NACADA. Nomination form and a letter of support must be submitted to Michelle Wiley, assistant director of the Student Success Center, by 4:30pm Wednesday, March 9.
Volunteer opportunity available
The Pennsylvania Behavioral Health & Aging Coalition is seeking older adult volunteers for their Aging Coalition Trainers (ACT) program. Volunteers must be 60 or older.
The ACT Program is a new training project that trains older adult volunteers to provide information to other older adults in group settings. Information will include behavioral health concerns, substance abuse, suicide prevention and the knowledge of the availability of resources in the local community.
Training will be held on March 11 at the Stairways Behavioral Health Center, 2185 W. Eighth St. Interested volunteers can call 717-649-0452.
University holds journalism contest
The journalism communications program is holding its annual journalism contest, open to all Gannon students. Submissions will fall under six categories: news, features, op-ed, reviews, sports and photo. Entries are due by noon Friday in Frank Garland’s English department mailbox, Room 3227 of the A.J. Palumbo Academic Center.
Students may enter two articles per category. Entries must have published in a campus or professional medium between Feb. 27, 2010 and Feb. 25, 2011.
Tape each entry to 8.5-by-11 white paper and print category, name of publication, date published, your name, major, year and phone number on the back of the paper.
Deadline nears for “WILD” conference registration
Gannon’s Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will soon be holding its fourth annual Women in Leadership Development (WILD) Conference. The last day to register is Friday, March 4. The event will be held Friday, March 25 at the Bayfront Convention Center and will feature Bill Rancic, Donald Trump’s original “Apprentice”; Connie Podesta, who will speak on leadership; and Jan McInnis, who will speak on wellness. Continental breakfast, lunch and a survival satchel are included.

Recyclemania challenge continues
Recyclemania is underway and will continue through April 2. During this time, Gannon will be measuring and reporting its recycling and waste production to compete in this nationwide collegiate challenge aimed at increasing our recycling awareness and participation. Faculty and staff can do their part by making a conscious effort to recycle paper, bottles, cans and plastics. So instead of throwing those items out, please place them in the proper bin.
Scholarship opportunity available
Abbott & Fenner has a $1,000 scholarship available to all high school juniors and seniors as well as all students currently registered in any accredited post-secondary institution.
Interested applicants will need to write an essay on the topic, “What have you done outside of the classroom that demonstrates qualities sought after by universities and other educational facilities? Of these, which means the most to you?” The essay must between 500 and 1,000 words and must be e-mailed to [email protected]. The deadline for the award is June 18.
