Volunteer opportunity available
The Pennsylvania Behavioral Health & Aging Coalition is seeking older adult volunteers for their Aging Coalition Trainers (ACT) program. Volunteers must be 60 or older.
The ACT Program is a new training project that trains older adult volunteers to provide information to other older adults in group settings. Information will include behavioral health concerns, substance abuse, suicide prevention and the knowledge of the availability of resources in the local community.
Training will be held on March 11 at the Stairways Behavioral Health Center, 2185 W. 8th St. Interested volunteers can call 717-649-0452.
Financial aid workshop
Gannon University will host a free financial aid workshop at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in Room 1200 of the A.J. Palumbo Academic Center. The workshop will include an overview of the financial aid process and a step-by-step review of the FAFSA. For more information, contact financial aid at 814-871-7337.
Jocks vs. Docs volleyball game
Student athletes will be pitted against faculty members in the Jocks vs. Docs volleyball game, which will be held 5:30 p.m. Sunday in the Hammermill Center. All proceeds will benefit the Make-A-Wish foundation.
Gannon is competing with all Division II athletics schools in an effort to raise the most money. The Student Athletic Advisory Committee will sponsor the game. There will also be raffles during the games, which are up for purchase in the Waldron Campus Center between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. through Friday. Prizes include a free pizza and surprise gift baskets. GU Gold, cash and checks are accepted.
“This Life In Blackness” lecture
Elon James White, host of the award-winning web series “This Week In Blackness” will give Gannon’s Black History Month lecture. The lecture, “This Life in Blackness,” will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in room 104 of the Zurn Science Center. For more information, contact the APB office at 814-871-7766.
University holds journalism contest
The journalism communications program is holding its annual journalism contest, open to all Gannon students. Submissions will fall under six categories: news, features, op-ed, reviews, sports and photo. Entries are due by noon on Friday, Feb. 25, in Frank Garland’s English department mailbox, Room 3227 of the A.J. Palumbo Academic Center.
Students may enter two articles per category. Entries must have published in a campus or professional medium between Feb. 27, 2010 and Feb. 25, 2011.
Tape each entry to 8.5-by-11 white paper and print category, name of publication, date published, your name, major, year and phone number on the back of the paper.
Scholarship opportunity available
Abbott & Fenner has a $1,000 scholarship available to all high school juniors and seniors, as well as all students currently registered in any accredited post-secondary institution.
Interested applicants will need to write an essay on the topic “What have you done outside of the classroom that demonstrates qualities sought after by universities and other educational facilities? Of these, which means the most to you?” The essay must between 500 and 1,000 words and must be e-mailed to [email protected]. The deadline for the award is June 18.
