Get the most for your money when boot shopping this fall

Boots come in all different varieties and serve many different purposes.

Some boots are for utility: rain boots, cowboy boots and equestrian boots. But even those boots can be used for fashion.

Doc Martens were some sort of gothic fashion statement when my mom was in school.

Nowadays, we have desert boots, high-heel boots, Ugg boots and even Converse boots. There are so many choices, it can be overwhelming, but I’m here to help. Here are some tips on buying the best boot for you.

The boot you buy should flatter your figure. There are several different aspects that come into play, like the length of the boot, the shape of the toe and even the height of the heel that can affect the way you look in them. Here are some tips to get the most out of your boot purchase.

Ankle-length, calf-length and knee-length boots work well. Over the knee boots will make you look shorter than you already are.

For curvy/short women, ankle-length and knee-length boots are your best bet. Something that falls at your calf will make the calf look wider than it actually is. Tall/curvy women look best in ankle boots, calf-length  and knee-length boots. Tall/thin women can wear basically any fit, as per usual, says that bitter short/curvy woman writing this article.

The shape of the toe and style of the heel can also have some effect on how the boot will look on you. Pointed-toe boots are best for smaller feet. Flat boots are made for women with longer legs. Wedge heels are ideal for curvier types, whereas stiletto heels are best for long, thin legs.

Beware of boot-buying traps. Good boot purchases are never inexpensive. Think about it –  there’s a lot more material than any other shoe and good material costs money. If your boots were a cheap buy, chances are you bought cheap-looking boots.

When you’re buying online, make sure you check the calf circumference of the boot. You don’t want beautiful boots to show up at your house, and then not be able to get them on your leg.

Don’t even consider buying fake suede boots. They won’t keep your toes warm and if you step in a puddle, your shoe becomes an indoor pool.

Watch out for vinyl or imitation leather boots. We’ve all made the mistake of buying the $20 boots that you think are going to last you all winter. Next thing you know, you accidentally trip and the painted-on brown stuff scuffs off and reveals the fabric that was underneath. You want to make sure that if you’re buying leather boots, that it’s genuine leather. It’s worth the extra money because these will actually last.

Notable boot-buying places would be DSW or Macy’s. TJ Maxx and Marshall’s can be a good place to find great boots, but they also have some not-so-quality ones, too, so be careful and follow the rules we discussed above.

Wherever you go, good luck and have fun.
