Dress for heat before weather starts cooling

Summer is not the time of year I typically think of when I hear the word fashion.

I think of fall fashion shows in Milan – not that I’ve ever been there – or mink coats and fur wraps, and you’ve got to be pretty cold to wear that kind of material. I don’t typically think of summer as the time for fashion because that’s the time when we’re wearing the least amount of clothes.

In this article I’ll give you some tips on how to make the most of what little clothes you wear while staying cool this summer.

For those of you who are fresh out of high school, congratulations. Here in college there’s no rule that says your shorts have to be fingertip length and no one cares how many straps you have holding your shirt up.

But with great power comes great responsibility, so let’s try to use our best judgment on that one.

Every girl from high school probably owns five pairs of American Eagle shorty-shorts and a corresponding plain Hollister or Abercrombie shirt.

There’s nothing wrong with that. It’s a nice standard to have; in fact I think that’s what I wore Wednesday, but try not to fall into the habit of wearing a variation of that outfit every day. It’s just so… boring.

Let me introduce you to something equally as ventilated and much more fun. Say hello to the sundress!

You should take advantage of the few days of sun left to wear this item before you’re forced to wear pants and parkas for the rest of the year. For those of you new to Pennsylvania – prepare yourselves.

I love wearing dresses because it’s just one article of clothing to put on my body and I don’t have to worry about matching it with anything. It’s so easy!

You can wear it with sandals. You can wear it with wedges. You can wear it with boots. You can wear it with Toms!

If you still don’t feel like a dress is your thing, try skirting it. And if you still don’t like that, you can stick with shorts, but you should probably try to broaden your horizon a little at some point.

My friend Natalie wears essentially a different skirt combo every day. Sometimes it’s a high-waist, flowy skirt with a fitted tee. Other times it’s a short, pleated skirt with a little cardigan. It’s always very cute and works for her!

However, if you’ve tried dressing it up and skirting around and you still want to stay in the shorts arena, please do not fall into the trend of the high-waist, cut-off shorts and midriff, spandex top with combat boots. I don’t know what that is, but it’s not a fashion statement.

Get all of your shorts, skirts, dresses, and flip flops in now while the weather is good and enjoy your first days of college!
