Accessories add flair and sophistication

I’d like to take this time to talk about the art of accessorizing.

I find myself guilty of this as well, but we often forget to put on those last few touches as we’re flying out the door to an 8 a.m. class. Honestly, if you can leave your apartment in something other than your pajamas that early in the day, I commend you.

However, if you do find the time, accessories can make an outfit and really make the wearer look much more put together. Without earrings, bracelets or some sort of scarf, you might as well be in junior high all over again.

As mentioned in an earlier column, emerald is the color of the year. So to keep up with trendy fashion collections, you’re going to want to add a little emerald to your jewelry collection.

According to the Asian calendar, 2013 is also the year of the snake, but I wouldn’t go sporting a boa constrictor around as an accessory. That’s just me though.

Last year was all about the studs, and it’s not summery enough yet to break out long dangly earrings.

Appropriately enough, subtle drop earrings are making a statement right now. They give off a classy feel to any ensemble and were very popular on the red carpet Sunday.

Anyone who knows me knows that I love to wear scarves. Pashmina, yarn knit, wool-blend – all of these are good ideas for this time of year.

Wear solid colors or patterns with a fine design such as paisley or houndstooth. If you have 4 ½ minutes you should check out a video on YouTube that I thought was helpful by WendysLookBook called “25 ways to wear a scarf.”

As surprised as you may be, hair ornaments are making an appearance in fashion. I don’t mean a hair pick in your ‘fro. Anyone remember Bernadette Peters in “Cinderella?” That’s what I mean.

I don’t know that I will personally experiment with this trend, but I thought you should know that tiaras and crowns are back, baby!
