Erie, PA. – The Gannon Golden Knights water polo team swept all three opponents in the WWPA Erie Classic Tournament last weekend. Gannon’s Alexandros Kotskar had a historic weekend, breaking a record for the Golden Knights on Sunday. Gannon improved its season record to 6-6 and closed the month of September with a win streak.
The Golden Knights kicked off the Erie Invitational on Saturday with a 22-7 blowout win over Washington & Jefferson. Gannon goalkeeper Bator Mohacsi’s nine saves helped end a three-game losing streak entering the contest. The back half of the doubleheader featured Gannon defeating rival Penn State Behrend 24-14. The Golden Knights offense produced 43 shots while Alexandros Kotskar’s six goals edged him closer to make Gannon history.
The Golden Knights concluded the tournament on Sunday morning against their winless rival Mercyhurst. Kotskar entered the game two points shy of Gannon’s program record for career points. The senior scored a goal and assisted on Petar Markovic’s score in the first quarter to officially become the all-time leading scorer in Golden Knights history.
A high-scoring first half would give Gannon a 14-7 lead entering the break. After the Lakers scored the first goal of the second half, Mateja Zjacic produced two of his team’s three-straight goals to extend the Golden Knights lead to nine. Gannon shut the door on any Mercyhurst comeback in the fourth quarter, holding the Lakers to one goal in the final five minutes. Meanwhile Kotskar, Markovic, and Nikiforos Liantziris combined for six unanswered goals to secure the 26-14 win.
Kotskar was very thankful following the game. He said, “Thanks to my coaches, thanks to my team. It’s a team sport and without my team I couldn’t do that.” The Golden Knights will participate in the WWPA Bearcat Clash in O’Fallon, Ill starting on Oct. 11.
