Erie, PA. — At Gannon University, the wrestling mat is more than just a platform for competition. It’s a venue to grit, dedication, and leadership. Tom Boyd keeps the program’s dominance since stepping into the role of head coach. Through innovative training methods, refined nutrition plans, and an emphasis on mental resilience, Boyd ensures the Golden Knights remain a dominant team. How exactly has he kept the momentum going?
Boyd isn’t a newcomer to the Gannon wrestling scene. Serving as an assistant coach for over two decades, he worked alongside legendary head coach Don Henry. After Henry’s retirement, Boyd seamlessly transitioned into the head coach position, inheriting both expectations and responsibilities. “I had a great experience as an assistant under Coach Henry,” Boyd says. “I wrestled for him, coached with him, and learned from him.” Boyd also believes that one outstanding difference that sets him apart from Coach Henry is being more vocal as a coach.
With a long history in the sport, Boyd’s own career includes Hall of Fame recognition and an impressive wrestling background. “I loved that in wrestling, it tested everything in me,” Boyd reflects. “The work that I put in determined what I earned. It had that individual component but also a team aspect.”

One of Boyd’s new strategies is revising the team’s training regimen. He has decided to take away the one-size-fits-all workouts. Boyd introduced specialized programs that accommodate each athlete’s strengths and weaknesses. Wrestlers undergo strength and conditioning exercises fitted to their weight classes and wrestling styles. Additionally, he brought in more sports performance experts to maximize the team’s physical potential.
To further enhance results, Boyd tracks data on each wrestler’s progress using performance analytics. Like muscle recovery patterns, his evidence-based approach has redefined how the team trains. Alongside these improvements, Boyd also encourages mental training sessions, introducing mindfulness techniques to enhance focus and resilience.
Boyd also implemented a mentorship system, pairing upperclassmen with younger athletes to foster camaraderie and personal growth. Wrestlers not only gain experience from seasoned teammates but also build a support network that strengthens the overall team culture. This mentoring approach has contributed to the Golden Knights’ consistently strong performances at national competitions.
In addition to physical conditioning, Boyd emphasizes proper nutrition and recovery. His background as a chiropractor has equipped him with knowledge of injury prevention and physical wellness. “Injury prevention and recovery are huge,” Boyd emphasizes. “We have a fantastic trainer, but my expertise helps me spot issues early and make decisions to keep our athletes healthy.” By introducing proper meal plans and recovery sessions, Boyd ensures his wrestlers are physically and mentally prepared for competition.
The team also has access to recovery tools like compression therapy and regular chiropractic adjustments. Boyd’s approach has minimized injuries and enhanced overall performance. Additionally, the coach has brought in mental health programs to support the wrestlers’ mental health, addressing stress management and performance anxiety.

Boyd’s influence extends beyond the wrestling room. He provides a positive environment where athletes are encouraged to excel academically and personally. Inspired by Jon Gordon’s “The Energy Bus,” Boyd believes everyone on his team must be high-energy and positive people. He meets regularly with his team to monitor their progress in classes, offering guidance and opportunities to help them stay on top. Academic tutoring sessions are available to ensure student-athletes remain on track.
Boyd has also expanded mentorship programs that include career development resources. Alumni often return to offer advice, job connections, and opportunities for internships, emphasizing long-term success beyond wrestling. This complete approach to student-athlete development has earned the program widespread recognition.
This commitment to well-rounded development has contributed to Gannon’s consistent performance at regional and national competitions. Under Boyd’s leadership, the Golden Knights recently clinched the Super Regional title, securing their place at the NCAA Division II Championships.
In addition to competitive success, Boyd emphasizes leadership with the team. Team captains receive mentorship on leadership principles, inspiring them to guide their teammates both on and off the mat. He also encourages community service projects, with the team participating in volunteer activities such as mentoring young wrestlers and supporting local services. “We volunteer, serve, and strive to be role models. Wrestling teaches life lessons; I want them to carry those forward” he says.

Beyond the university, Boyd remains engaged with the local wrestling community. He frequently hosts high school wrestling clinics and partners with regional high schools to support young athletes. His dedication to developing future talent has earned him praise from the community. These outreach efforts have made Gannon’s wrestling program valued in the athletic community. Boyd has also expanded the university’s outreach by establishing scholarship programs for aspiring student-athletes, ensuring that talent, not financial circumstances, determines opportunities.
Under Boyd’s leadership, Gannon’s recruitment efforts have also reached new heights. He has expanded the program’s scouting network, bringing in top-level talent from across the nation. By creating a culture of accountability, respect, and personal growth, Boyd wishes to continue Gannon wrestling as a respected program. His dedication has not only built strong athletes but also shaped future leaders in the sport and beyond.
Boyd remains committed to the future of Gannon wrestling. His goals include expanding recruitment efforts and continuing to improve the training process. He believes the program’s best days are still ahead. With plans to include more sports techniques and enhance academic support programs, Boyd is taking a complete approach to athletic and personal development. He also hopes to invite top wrestlers and coaches to share their excellence.
