Gannon University will be celebrating National Library Week from April 7-13 in the Nash Library and Student Learning Commons by asking the Gannon community to share what their favorite books are.
This is an annual celebration that recognizes the value of libraries and librarians.
It highlights the role that libraries play in our daily lives.
Libraries strengthen our communities and this year’s worldwide theme is “Libraries = Strong Communities.”
Libraries serve as the center of our communities providing resources for schools, campuses and research.
The Nash Library’s mission is to contribute to instructional programs and offer services that facilitate the needs of students and faculty.
They also provide information and learning resources in an appropriate format to support the curricular and research needs of students and faculty.
To celebrate National Library Week, the Nash Library is partaking in an activity where the faculty were asked to share their all-time favorite book for the chance to win a car wash coupon from any Niagara Car Wash establishment in Erie.
Deb West, Nash’s Reference and Instructional librarian, announced that the winner of the drawing was David Pier, Ph.D., from the mathematics department.
Library staff will post the results of what some of the book titles are in the library concourse to encourage students to participate and share their favorite book too.
Libraries also play a key role at resourcing the community with technological advances, such as computers and printers, that may not be available to a sector of our community.
Gabriel Simon, a junior biomedical engineering and mechanical engineering major, currently works at the Nash’s front desk as a student supervisor.
He described his experience as one of the best jobs he has had so far.
“Working at the front desk has helped me improved my communication skills with the public,” Simon said.
As a student supervisor, he helps people find library resources and helps with printer and computer problems.
“I have had the opportunity to meet people from various countries and sectors while working with a great team.”
He also helps students find books for research papers or connect them to other libraries to find them.
Brooke Narring, a freshman nursing major, said that Nash is the place where she studies the most and she said she doesn’t know what she would do without having the library space.
“For us students, the library is an essential part of our education,” Narring said.
“It’s the place where I feel most comfortable to fulfill my assignments.”
Kyla McNulty, a freshman public service and global affairs major, uses the library facilities frequently.
“I normally check out a couple of books each month due to the assignments I have to do for my history classes,” McNulty said.
“If it weren’t for the help of student workers at the library and the online website, I would never find what I need.”
Corrine Fischer, a freshman occupational therapy major, described the library as her second home.
“I love all it has offer, especially the study spaces because it allows me to study independently or with friends,” she said.
