Gannon University’s unbeaten men’s water polo team ran its season-long win streak to 13 games last week, picking up a pair of exhibition wins over Penn State Behrend and Mount San Antonio and a victory over Salem University.
The Knights topped Behrend’s “B” team, 20-5, and defeated Salem University, 18-12, at the Penn State Behrend Open on Saturday after whipping Mount San Antonio, 25-11, Friday on Senior Night at the Carneval Athletic Pavilion pool.
During the first quarter against Penn State Behrend the Knights scored seven goals and shut out Behrend. Tony Squeglia, Drago Marjanovic, John Vieira, Thomas Uht, Lucas Petzold and Robert Bolmanski all scored for the Knights during the flurry.
The Lions and Gannon both scored three additional goals before halftime, leaving the Knights with a 10-3 lead.
Gannon scored five goals in the third and fourth quarters while PSB managed two more. Bolmanski led the Knights with six goals.
The Knights started the Penn State Behrend Open with a win against Salem on Saturday.
Squeglia scored the first goal of the game for the Knights followed by four additional goals from teammates.
Gannon deposited three more shots into the back of the net before halftime. Salem scored four goals in the second quarter, putting the Knights up 8-4.
Gannon opened the third quarter with five straight goals. Salem managed to score eight goals in the time remaining, but the Knights tacked on five more to put the game out of reach. Squeglia led the scoring drive with five goals. Nate Winkler led the defensive stand with six saves in goal.
The Knights posted a season-high 25 goals during Senior Night at the Carneval Athletic Pavilion Pool.
Opening the game with a 5-2 lead, the Knights never looked back. Squeglia opened the scoring drive 30 seconds into the game. At halftime the Knights lead, 12-5.
Goalkeeper Brett Rehrer scored on a long shot in the third quarter. The Knights won 25-11, working in a variety of personnel for the remainder of the match.
Gannon scored on 6-of-11 power play chances and was 4-for-4 on five-meter penalties.
Gannon honored three seniors before the game: Brett Rehrer, Jake Rehrer, and Zarko Sadikovic.
The Knights will return to the pool on Saturday, Oct. 13, in Lebanon, Ill., for the CWPA DII Championships. The event is to be hosted by McKendree University.
