Antonio “A.J.” Palumbo, center, poses with students after speaking on campus on Sept. 13, 1999. Earlier that year, Palumbo had donated $750,000 toward the construction of the Waldron Campus Center, bringing his total donations to $1.85 million. Palumbo, the son of an immigrant coal miner, was a self-made millionaire and philanthropist who never attended high school. He passed away in 2002 at the age of 96.
