Knights drop first home loss in 21 games

After splitting its two road matches over the weekend with a loss at Edinboro and a win at Slippery Rock, the Gannon University women’s volleyball team was unable to defend home court Tuesday when crosstown rival Mercyhurst took a 3-1 victory at the Hammermill Center.

Gannon and Mercyhurst entered the match tied for second place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, both touting 5-1 conference records. With the loss, Gannon fell to 5-2 in the PSAC and 10-6 overall.

The loss snapped the Knights’ 20-match unbeaten streak at the Hammermill Center. The last time Gannon was defeated on its home court was more than a year ago – Sept. 28, 2012, when California University of Pennsylvania posted a 3-1 victory.

Freshman Hannah Kren paced Gannon in the loss to the Lakers with 12 kills and 10 digs while fellow freshman Jordyn Thiery contributed six kills and 17 digs.

Taryn Graham led the Knights with 18 digs while Megan Wendel contributed 30 assists and five kills.

Kayla Knickerbocker added eight kills in the loss.

Gannon opened by winning the first set 26-24 but Mercyhurst answered by winning the next three in a row – 25-19, 25-16 and 29-27.

While the Knights played a good game on Friday, it was just not good enough to walk away with a win on the road  against Edinboro.

Gannon lost in a five-set match played at the McComb Fieldhouse. Gannon won the first set with a score of 25-22 but Edinboro bounced back in the second set winning with a score of 25-13.

The Knights were able to take the second set with a score of 17-25, but the Fighting Scots took the next two sets at 26-24 and 15-11.

During the match against Edinboro, Knickerbocker recorded 13 kills while Kren registered 11 kills. Other standout players included Wendel, who recorded 38 assists, and Thiery, who recorded 16 digs. The team finished the match with a .101 hitting percentage, which is the second lowest on the season.

Luckily, the Knights had a chance to redeem themselves Saturday at the Morrow Fieldhouse when the team faced off against Slippery Rock. Gannon was able to take this match  in four sets.

The lead in the first set was ping-ponging back and forth until Gannon finally took control and held on until it finished the set at 25-19.

Slippery Rock came into the second match looking for revenge and playing hard. The score was tied seven different times throughout the set until Slippery Rock finally snatched the win with 25-23. Gannon took control over the rest of the match. A kill from Demma Straushbaugh off of  an assist by Wendel sealed the match with a  score of 25-19.
