Once upon a time, a 13-year-old girl played a Green Day album for her dad, to which he commented with dismay that all the songs sounded exactly alike.

Maybe that’s what makes the band so great – it has managed to make a solid career of recreating the same song over and over for 25 years.

But hey – it’s a really good song.

We all love to pick on them, but in reality Green Day has done what few bands these days can even manage to try – it has survived. While it will never compare to the ultimate greats, like The Beatles, Green Day can at least boast that more than one generation knows its name.

And there was a time, dare we recall, when the band was legitimately good. The days of “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” and “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” for example, were among the band’s best. But that time has passed. And although we will remember these songs for years to come, it’s time for Green Day to put their music-creating skills to bed.

The band’s newest album, “¡Uno!,” was released on Sept. 24 and is part of a three-part compilation, which is currently in progress. “¡Dos!” is set to be released on Nov. 13, and “¡Tré!” is rumored for January 2013.

But unless the band’s got something great and completely unexpected in store, it would probably be fine with the rest of the world if they were to stop with No. 1.

There’s nothing in their range of capabilities that the members of Green Day haven’t already done. While fans love it, Billie Joe Armstrong’s voice isn’t unique anymore, and the punk rock scene now has some legitimate competition. There’s no way that these geezers – though experienced – are going to be able to compete with the new sound.

There may be something to be said for the petty arguments and hefty egos that cause band members to part ways mid-career. Otherwise, fans are left with the same old sound in an age where “same old” is a synonym for “boring.”

And while it contained nothing especially noteworthy, “¡Uno!” does have that distinct, same old Green Day sound. If that’s what you’re looking for, then I would encourage you to purchase the album. It sounds just like the rest.

If you were looking for something a little unique – some of us are still looking for a little bit of variety – then you’ll probably be disappointed. This album doesn’t contain any big hits. It would be a shock to hear one of the songs on a Top 40 radio station.

Though we still love to sing along, it turns out October still has all the same old stuff we slept through in September.
