5K race to fight cancer

The Second Annual Rivals Linked By Pink 5K Run/Walk, which has Gannon University and Mercyhurst University students joining forces, will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 14, at the Gannon University Carneval Athletic Pavilion.

The race is being organized by second-year students of the Gannon University doctorate of physical therapy program, and everyone is invited to participate.

There is a $15 pre-registration race fee, if turned in by March 31, and a $20 fee the day of the race.  This includes a T-shirt and prizes for the top overall male and female runners.

Day of the race registration begins at 7:30 a.m., with the race kicking off at 9:00 a.m.

The 5K race will begin and end at the Gannon University Carneval Athletic Pavilion, and participants may choose to either run or walk the course.

Registration forms are available in the physical therapy department in Morosky, or the Rivals Linked By Pink table in the Waldron Campus Center.

Checks should be made payable to “Linked By Pink,” and all proceeds will benefit the organization.

Linked By Pink is a local nonprofit organization that raises awareness and money for breast cancer research and treatment, principally for women diagnosed before the age of 45.

The doctorate of physical therapy program at Gannon University and the Sports Medicine Student Association of Mercyhurst University proudly form a bond to link the two rival schools to raise money for a good cause on race day.

“This race is a chance for two schools that are so close in proximity to come together to help out the community,” Ashley Forbes, senior physical therapy major and race participant, said.

“For how close the schools are we should do more together, and this is a great step in that direction.”

Linked By Pink was founded by Heather Stempka in 2008, when she was undergoing treatment for her second diagnosis of breast cancer at the age of 32.

She found camaraderie and support with a core group of young women facing the same challenges.

Stempka then decided to extend this support to more survivors in the Erie community, and Linked By Pink was formed by her and five other founding members in September of 2008.

Registration race forms are available in the physical therapy department at Gannon University, or online at www.linkedbypink.org, and must be returned by March 31 for the pre-registration rate and the guarantee of a T-shirt.
