More than 200 participants gear up for Relay for Life

Some 200 Gannon University students, faculty and staff will participate in the university’s annual Relay for Life on Friday.

The Relay will begin at 1 p.m. at the field adjacent to the university’s Carneval Athletic Pavilion. Nearly 30 teams of students, faculty and staff will continue walking until 1 a.m. Saturday in hopes of raising $20,000 for the American Cancer Society.

Jeana Smith, co-chair of the event, is one of those 200 who will be participating in this year’s event.

“I participate to support the fight against cancer and to hopefully one day find a cure,” the junior 3+3 sports and exercise science physical therapy major said.

Smith said she will be there from 2 p.m. to 1 a.m. Although 200 people are expected to come, she said she hopes that more than 500 people will come. Each participant was encouraged to raise at least $100.

This year, Relay for Life features a local band, The Romantic Era, who will be playing from about 4:30-5:30 p.m. A “Survivor Banquet” will be held at 5:35 p.m. A Luminaria ceremony will be held at 9 p.m. Following that, the “Fight Back with Zumba” ceremony will be held at 10 p.m.
