Erie, PA. – A current (and soon-to-be former) editor of The Gannon Knight looks back on his experience at the newspaper and how it positioned him for future success.
With less than two months until my graduation from Gannon University, I have taken the opportunity to reflect on my journey at the school and its publication, The Gannon Knight. Since my first involvement with the paper in 2022, being part of The Gannon Knight has been one of the most rewarding and memorable experiences of my college years.
I never considered pursuing a degree in journalism, but as a timid kid back in high school, I always found peace in writing. While choosing journalism could be seen as an impulsive decision, there must have been some deep-rooted instinct that guided me to this choice. After taking a few journalistic writing classes, I realized that journalism, at its core, was not what I had initially imagined. Journalistic writing is not always a peaceful process – where one simply sits in a quiet place and pours their thoughts onto the page – but rather a profession that requires dedication and mental strength. Through the program, I have learned how to write different types of leads, structure an effective article, conduct and analyze research, and apply AP style. These skills have not only advanced my career but have also trained me to look beneath the surface, interpreting and understanding the nuanced dimensions of modern media.
Being a full-time student and an editor isn’t always easy, and I am no stranger to imposter syndrome. However, something continues to push me forward.
It could be the “grand” civic function of journalism – to inform the public and, in many cases, to amplify unheard voices. Still, I believe the greatest driving force has been the unwavering support I have received throughout this journey, whether from faculty or my peers. Writing for The Gannon Knight has taught me many invaluable lessons: the importance of learning from mistakes, recognizing and refining my writing style, and most importantly, developing my own voice in a turbulent world.
While this incredible experience will soon come to an end, it will remain not just a few lines on my résumé but a defining chapter that will continue to shape my future, both personally and professionally.
