Erie, PA. —The Gannon Golden Knights Men’s Basketball Team captured its second-straight Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) title on Sunday. Gannon earned its fourth championship since joining the conference in 2008. The Golden Knights would defeat the Shepherd University Rams to become tournament champions.
Both teams would go back-and-forth trading baskets to start the game. Halfway through the period, it would be a 14-all contest. The Golden Knights would soon take off. Gannon made three-straight three pointers, including two by freshman Pace Prosser, to take a nine-point lead. Ernest Shelton’s dunk would make it 15-unanswered points by Gannon. Prosser would score the last seven points for his team in the first half. His 15 points helped give Gannon a 36-26 lead at halftime.
An 8-3 run to start the second half cut the Gannon lead to five. Justin DeBuck’s three-pointer would give the Golden Knights some comfort. After Shepherd cut the deficit to nine, Prosser made back-to-back shots to 16 with less than eight minutes to go. It would be too late for the Rams as Gannon’s lead would be insurmountable. The Golden Knights would become champions once again!
Prosser would be named tournament MVP after his 29-point performance which included making five three pointers. DeBuck and Shelton each had 14 points in the win while Tasman Goodrick picked up eight rebounds. As a team, Gannon scored 19 points off turnovers.
The Golden Knights improved to 25-6 on the season. They are currently on a nine-game win streak and have not lost since February 1st. Next up, the Golden Knights will participate in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Tournament. The tournament runs from March 15-29.
Gannon will host East Stroudsburg as the number two seed. The game will take place on Saturday, March 15th at 2:30 PM in West Liberty, Va. The teams faced each other on November 23rd where the Golden Knights claimed a 12-point victory at home. Shelton will look to replicate his performance in the first meeting as he had 23 points against the Warriors.
