Erie, PA. —The Gannon Golden Knights hockey club fell short despite a late tying goal in the third period on Saturday. Behrend’s two power play goals would be the difference maker as Gannon fell to 4-6 in UNYCHL play.
The Behrend Lions opened the scoring just past the halfway mark of the first period. Behrend’s Thomas Steele and Owen Gratkowski scored less than two minutes apart to give their team an early two goal lead. Gannon’s Chris Spriegel would cut the deficit to one with his goal just over two minutes to go. The Golden Knights would trail 2-1 after the opening period.
Two minutes into the second period, a solid pass would set up Gannon’s Kyle Hawks in front of the net to tie the game. Minutes later, Nicholas Austin Nagy’s shot from the blue line would give the Golden Knights the lead. Towards the end of the period, Behrend’s Jacob Hannah would tie the game once again on the power play. Goaltender Meric Larson was brilliant in the second period. The Behrend Lions took the lead seven minutes into the third period. The puck bounced off goalie Meric Larson’s pads and Nathan Burge would clean up the rebound to make it 4-3. It wouldn’t be long before Danny Conrad’s power play goal would once again tie the game for Gannon. Less than 45 seconds later, Behrend answered with a power play goal of their own as Logan Pierce would give the lead back to the Lions. With five minutes left in the game, Owen Gratkowski would find Jacob Hannah in front of the net for his second goal of the game and one that would seal a victory for Penn State Behrend.
