Erie, Pa.— The Gannon Men’s Club Hockey Team has kicked off the spring semester season. The club will once again participate in The Upstate New York Collegiate Hockey League and AAU College Hockey. The Golden Knights returned to UNYCHL action on January 24th against Jamestown Community College.
In the first period, the Jayhawks would jump to a hot start scoring the first three goals in the first period. Nicholas Austin Nagy’s powerplay goal would get Gannon on the board but the team would head to intermission trailing 4-1 after one.
The second period would pose a challenge to the Golden Knights as Jamestown dominated, scoring five unanswered goals on 17 shots. Despite having six powerplay opportunities, Gannon had trouble getting the puck past Jayhawks goalie Colin Norlander. The deficit would increase to eight after two periods of play.
Entering the third period, Jamestown’s Brandon Smith, who had scored two goals already, entered the game at net in relief for Norlander. Gannon would find the back of the net twice from Chris Spriegel and Danny Conrad. Unfortunately, it would be too late as Gannon lost its first game of the new year by a score of 10-3.
Hitting the ice the next day against Allegheny College, the Golden Knights would find the win column. Gannon owned the opening period with 20 shots on goal. Landon Wurst and Nagy scored the first two goals of the game to put the Golden Knights up 2-0.
The Gators would fight back as the team tied the game 2-2, scoring both goals in the first five minutes of the period. Minutes later, Christian Cole would answer back giving Gannon the lead back entering the final frame.
Conrad’s goal halfway through the third period would extend the Golden Knights’ lead to two. Minutes later, Nagy’s second goal of the game on the power play would make it 5-2. Both teams would add one more as Gannon escaped with a 6-3 road win over Allegheny College.
On Sunday, January 26th, the Golden Knights closed out the weekend participating in AAU College Hockey with a game against the Canisius University Griffs at Erie Insurance Arena. Despite being on home ice, Gannon would be defeated 9-2. The team would return to the ice the following weekend with a match against Mercyhurst University’s AAU club team once again at the EIA. The Lakers would come out victorious with a 6-2 win over the Golden Knights.
Gannon’s Men’s Club Hockey Team will return to action this weekend with two matchups. The Golden Knights will host Jamestown Community College on Friday, February 7th at Erie Insurance Arena. They will play again on Saturday, February 8th at LECOM Sports Park where they will take on Penn State Behrend. Puck drop for both games is scheduled for 7:00PM.
