In preparation for spring recruitment, the social sororities of Gannon University will host a number of events in the coming weeks before Christmas break.
The remaining events for this semester are designed to give interested women the opportunity to learn more about each individual chapter at Gannon as well as sign.
The goal of these events is also to get as many women signed up for spring recruitment as possible. A table is set up in Waldron on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. where current sorority members are available to talk to interested women, give them more information and provide them with recruitment forms.
Sophomore English major Brittnie Knight said she believes everyone should give recruitment a try.
“Gannon Greek life is not the cliché you see in movies or TV; it’s not as intimidating or scary as it’s portrayed,” she said. “Even if you go through spring recruitment, nothing is set in stone until after the last round, so no one is forced into anything.”
One of the major opportunities for women interested in spring recruitment is called Recruitment in the Dorms. It will be held in the lobbies of Wehrle and Freshman Hall on Nov. 30 and in Finegan Hall on Dec. 1 and will include casual information sessions from recruitment counseling to an ice cream social.
There are five chapters of social sororities on campus: Alpha Gamma Delta, Alpha Sigma Alpha, Alpha Sigma Tau, Phi Sigma Sigma and Sigma Sigma Sigma. They are governed by the Panhellenic Council, which comprises representatives and delegates from each chapter.
Junior biology major Megan Schmitt said she encourages anyone who may be interested in sorority life to attend the events.
“It allows women to learn about the chapters in a bit more relaxed setting,” she said.
After Christmas break, spring recruitment will be held from Jan. 18-24. On Jan. 18 and 19, informational sessions will be held in Waldron 219, one of which is mandatory. On Jan. 20, there will be a mandatory Meet and Greet session in Yehl Ballroom, where each chapter will display a short presentation.
On Jan. 21, rounds will be held in Waldron where each person visits each chapter and narrows down the selection to four by the end of the night. The next day, women can visit up to four houses and narrow down their selections to three.
Preference rounds will be held the next day, Jan. 23, and women will subsequently submit final rankings of up to three chapters. These rankings are compared and matched up with the lists that each sorority will also make so that the selection process is mutual. Bid Night will be held in Yehl on Jan. 24 for women who accept bids to celebrate.
According to Kaitlin Musloe, a junior legal studies and business administration major, spring recruitment is a vital first step for Greeks at Gannon.
“Spring recruitment is a structured way for interested women on campus to get the opportunity to see all of the social sororities and learn more about our Greek system,” she said.
Sophomore accounting major Brittany Shelley said she plans to go through spring recruitment because it’s something she has always wanted to do.
“I’m excited to meet new people; it should be a lot of fun,” she said.
