Baseball picks up two PSAC victories

The Gannon University baseball team propelled itself to an overall record of 13-7 after winning a doubleheader Monday against Clarion University.

The Knights won the first game, 7-3, and finished the sweep with a 3-0 blanking of the Golden Eagles in the second game at McConnell Family Stadium.

Ty Phelps toed the rubber for Gannon in the first game, and Joey Colosi, Cody Callaway and Cory Hegedus came in after him to seal the victory.

The Knights were the first to cross home after Mike Colosi scored on a single by Elijah Quiceno to put the Knights up 1-0 in the first inning. Gannon rounded out the scoring by putting up four runs in its half of the sixth inning.

Clarion answered with three runs in the seventh, but it was not enough as Gannon took the win 7-3.

Mike Colosi and Quiceno each finished with two hits and two RBIs, and Colosi scored twice. Charles Benack drove in two runs for Gannon while Matt Oruch finished with a pair of hits and an RBI to help fuel the nine-hit attack.

In the nightcap, freshman Deven Judy pitched a complete-game shutout in his second career start for the Knights, giving up four hits and striking out nine.

The game was a pitchers’ duel until the fifth inning. Mike Colosi reached first on a Clarion error and was then moved to second after another error on a ball hit to third by Oruch.

Nate Cardy, who went 2-for-2, hit a double to drive in Colosi and move Oruch to third and then later scored on sacrifice fly by Dominic Mori.

Gannon’s final run was produced after Kyle Cox doubled to drive home Cardy.

Judy continued lights-out pitching and signed and sealed the win after retiring the first three Clarion batters in the seventh inning.

Up next the Knights – now 3-1 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play — will take on Seton Hill University at McConnell Family Stadium Friday in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. The same two teams will battle at Seton Hill Saturday in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
