Gannon University’s annual Greek Week is in full swing as events are being held through Saturday. The Panhellenic Council has been hosting this week of games and get-togethers since Sunday.
According to Lea Richir, the Panhellenic Council’s vice president of programming, Greek Week is a way to get non-Greeks to learn about Greek life through athletic, academic and social events. The week is a competition between men’s and women’s Greek chapters to show the unity amongst the Greek population.
Richir said that these activities are meant to give students a way to make memories here on campus and through Greek life.
According to Richir, this year, central locations were chosen for these events to increase student engagement. Another key element of increasing interest was to eliminate events that did not pull many students and replace them with new activities.
She said that this event is important for members of Greek life.
“I believe Greek Week is a crucial part to a member’s time in a chapter,” Richir said. “It really helps the chapter grow closer together, while also getting to know other chapters.
“It’s overall just a really fun way to bond with your brothers and sisters.”
The week kicked off with the all-Greek continental brunch Sunday. Students also had the opportunity to participate in a dodge ball competition.
The activities continued Monday with games of tug of war and Family Feud for attendees to take part in. A Jimmy John’s sub eating competition took play Tuesday, as well as a kickball game.
As the week continues, students are encouraged to attend the upcoming events in order to learn more about Greek life and what it is about, as well as how it plays a part on Gannon’s campus.
Jeopardy will be held from 9-10 p.m. Wednesday in Room 104 of the Zurn Science Center. Members of Greek life should wear their letters for this event.
A game of bubble soccer will be held from 1-3 p.m. Thursday at the Recreation and Wellness Center. The games are set to begin at 1:30 p.m. The Greek God/Goddess event will take place from 8-10 p.m. in Room 104 of the Zurn Science Center.
The volleyball tournament will be held from 3-6 p.m. Friday in the Recreation and Wellness Center. A lip-sync event will take place from 7-10 p.m. on the Friendship Green.
The week will come to a close Saturday with the last events. Students are encouraged to participate in Day of Caring from 8 a.m. to noon.
The all-Greek dinner will be held at 6 p.m. on the second floor of Beyer Hall. The dance will take place from 7-9 p.m. at the Recreation and Wellness Center Courts and the Greek Awards will follow that event.
