The Gannon University men’s golf team placed seventh at the two-day Howard “Bud” Elwell Invitational, which concluded Monday at Whispering Woods Country Club.
At the end of day one, junior Matt Barto held strong at second place, recording a season-low round of 72. While Barto was in second, Gannon’s team as a whole held down the fort in seventh place, a few places behind third, where they were last season at the invitational.
However, Barto wasn’t the only golfer who placed. Senior Daegan Wall placed 12th with a score of 78, freshman Kyle Luben shot 87 for 46th place, and senior Billy Clark tied freshman Jordan Henry, as both shot an 89 putting them in 50th.
Rounding out the placement was sophomore Billy Colbert in 53rd, shooting a 92, and junior Ryan Strauss placing 57th with a score of 98.
On day two, the Knights held seventh place where they finished out the invitational. Barto also kept his spot at second, the best of the 2016-17 season so far, shooting a 73 for the second day to give him a total score of 145.
The winner of the invitational was Mercyhurst golfer Chris Kupniewski, who shot a 71 on each day for a combined score of 142.
Wall placed 40th with a score of 89, Colbert placed 49th by shooting 81, 11 less than the day before. Henry knocked two strokes off the day before and placed 53rd, and Clark shot 88 and wound up in 54th place.
Luben earned 42nd place, shooting 81, and Straus shot 104, giving him 57th place.
Coming up next, Gannon will finish the fall season with the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships on Oct. 15-16 at Hershey Country Club.
