The Gannon University wrestling team concluded its home schedule Saturday night by honoring the team’s five seniors prior to a 32-15 loss to Seton Hill.
For Cory Fitzgerald, Lorenzo Maddox, Zach Reges, Aaron Smith and Andrew Wood , it was their last time hitting the mat at the Hammermill Center.
Gannon entered the match ranked No. 9 in the NCAA Division II Super Region One, while Seton Hill was No. 6.
Gannon also competed without starters in the 141- and 149-pound weight classes.
After Seton Hill forfeited to open the meet, the Griffins won the next two matches, as Gannon’s Zach Reges lost by technical fall at 141 pounds and Luke Walter fell by major decision at 149.
Garret Smith gave the Knights momentum when he pinned Ty Lydic with 13 seconds left in the first period of their 157-pound bout.
Following that match, Gannon led 12-9.
Gannon’s Nate Ross edged Andrew Doak, 1-0, at 165 pounds to extend Gannon’s lead to 15-9.
But Seton Hill won the remaining five matches – two by pin and three by decision.
Maddox, Gannon’s top-ranked wrestler, broke into the 184-pound regional rankings for the first time last week, coming in third. However, on Saturday he was pinned in the third overtime of his 197-pound battle with Jake Temple.
Gannon held an 8-1 edge all-time against Seton Hill prior to Saturday night’s match. After losing the first eight encounters, the Griffins have now beaten the Knights in two consecutive matches.
Gannon returns to the mat Friday at West Liberty. Gannon has defeated West Liberty nine consecutive times going into Friday’s meet.
