Now that we’ve all had a short break from classes, we’ll all have to face the dreaded F-word: Finals.
This isn’t exactly at the top of the list of things I’d like to talk about, but I know I need to, because there’s another F-word that could get in the way of studying for finals. That is Facebook.
Facebook in general is a great way to distract me from things I need to do, such as homework and studying, but the bad part about that is I do actually need to do the things I tend to avoid.
Such behaviors can be really bad during finals week, because chances are I’ll probably procrastinate till about a week before finals before I actually start studying. That’s with positive thinking.
Granted, once I start studying, I’ll more than likely be distracted by almost everything, including walls. But the fewer distractions, the better.
So what I plan to do this semester is have someone I know change my Facebook password and not tell me until I’m done with finals. It’s a bit more difficult to log on if you don’t know what your password is.
I could just as easily deactivate my account for the week, but it would be easy for me to reactivate my account and I wouldn’t have someone else to keep me accountable.
Now one may say there are plenty of other websites out there that could distract people from studying. While this is true, Facebook is one of the first sites some people log on to when they get on the Internet.
Most people would just tell me to have self-control and not log on to Facebook during finals week. To that, I say it would be much easier if I had more than a spoonful of self-control.
That being said, this will probably be incredibly difficult, as I’m hoping it would be for most people. Otherwise, I’m all alone in this borderline addiction.
It’s easier said than done, though. It’s always nice, and good for you, to take small breaks between studying. But it’s when those breaks become extended that a problem arises.
During the past two finals weeks, I’ve just tried to study in groups to keep me from logging onto Facebook. But when I’m not around other people, it’s harder for me to focus on what I need to be doing.
Being that this is the first time I’ve tried this, I’m not sure how well it will work. I may just end up staring at the ceiling as opposed to being on Facebook, but at that point at least I can say I tried.
Aside from that though, during finals week, when I’m not dreading the next final I have to take, I can be thinking about how there are only so many days until I can get on Facebook again.
Then, I can spend most of my winter break vegetating and wasting time on Facebook. That is until I have to actually think about the next semester and buy books for my classes. So that’ll last till a few days after New Year’s Eve.
Here’s to hoping this plan actually works.
