Erie, PA. – The Gannon Golden Knights women’s volleyball team extended their win streak to nine last weekend following two big wins on the road. The Golden Knights defeated Clarion University and Slippery Rock University on the road to remain unbeaten since Sept. 19.
The road campaign kicked off on Friday, Oct. 10, against Clarion. Gannon pulled away early in the first set with an early 7-2 lead following two attack errors. The Golden Knights would control the match holding onto a steady lead throughout. Lauren Atwell’s back-to-back kills powered a run that extended Gannon’s advantage to ten points. An attack error sealed a 25-14 set victory.
The start of set two would be different as Clarion powered to an early 5-2 lead. A kill from Nehir Yazicioglu would cut the Gannon deficit to one before five unanswered points by the Golden Eagles. Sydney Wake and Carlee Webber would rally the Golden Knights within striking distance, but Clarion held on for a 25-21 upset victory of set two.
Both teams kept it close in set three as Gannon led 11-8 towards the middle of the set. An impressive run allowed the Golden Knights to score nine of the next 10 points to extend their lead to 11. Atwell had two kills and a block during the rally. Wake would secure a 25-16 victory to give Gannon a 2-1 advantage.
The Golden Knights kicked off set four with six-straight points. Gannon led 13-4 as Clarion had recorded six errors earlier during the final set. The Golden Knights would close the door on any comeback and hold Clarion’s offense to only 13 points. Back-to-back attack errors by the Golden Eagles gave Gannon a 25-13 win.
Atwell’s 11 kills and Bengisu Arslan’s 36 assists paved the way for yet another Gannon volleyball victory. The Golden Knights win streak would be tested once again on Saturday, Oct. 11, against Slippery Rock.
Gannon would drop each of the first two sets by close margins. With their streak on the line, the Golden Knights rallied for three straight set victories, including a 15-13 contest in set five. Ella Woltman scored the game-winning kill to send Gannon home with nine-straight wins.
Atwell was rewarded with PSAC West Athlete of the Week following three games where she posted 30 kills and 13 blocks. The Golden Knights will host California (PA.) on Oct. 17 for Alumni Weekend at home. The game will start at 7:00 p.m. at Highmark Events Center, where Gannon will look to extend its streak to 10-straight victories.
