Gannon University, Erie Campus– Last weekend, Gannon University warmly welcomed back alumni, families, and friends, and current students to campus for Homecoming and Family Weekend. This year’s celebration carried a special significance as it marked the university’s 100th anniversary – a century defined by knowledge, community, and enduring values.
The campus came alive as thousands poured in, turning it into a hub of energy and excitement. The four–day Homecoming week offered a vibrant lineup of activities – from alumni gatherings and ribbon–cutting ceremonies to thrilling athletic events, lively block parties, campus tours, and a solemn mass.
The week began with the unveiling of a new Alumni House, formerly known as the Frederick Jarecki House. Dr. Walter Iwanenko, the president of Gannon, shared on Instagram “This house is a commitment to sustaining lifelong relationships, to fostering the spirit of engagement, and to ensuring that Gannon continues to be the source of inspiration, service, and transformation for years to come.”
On Saturday, the weekend reached its peak with the biggest and most festive event of all –“the Block Party of the century”. The scene came alive with people dancing to the music and jumping into all kinds of fun. Crowd lined up to try their hand at axe throwing, laughed their way through the wipeout challenge, and held on tight for the thrills of the mechanical bull ride. The mix of music, games, and shared excitement made the Block Party unforgettable.
No Homecoming week would be complete without the thrilling athletics showdown. This year, McConnell Family Stadium set the stage for a clash between the Golden Knights and East Stroudsburg. The energy was undeniable with cheers and chants from families, friends, and alumni filling the stands. Though the Golden Knights ultimately came up short with a 69–22 final, the game highlighted their determination and the strong spirit that brings the Gannon community together during Homecoming weekend.
Adding a bright spot to the weekend, Saturday night’s women’s soccer match brought a sweet victory for Gannon over California (Pennsylvania) by 1–0. The moment the goal hit the net, the stands erupted in cheers, filling the night with joy and pride.
The Homecoming week concluded with a solemn Mass at St. Peter Cathedral, graced by the presence of His Eminence Cardinal Christophe Pierre, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States of America.
Homecoming 2025 was more than a weekend of reunions and celebrations; it marked a historic milestone – 100 years of knowledge, faith, and community at Gannon University, a legacy that will continue to be written by generations to come.
