Erie, PA.— Every weekday at 8 a.m. the most under–appreciated campus amenity opens their doors. The Gannon University mail room works diligently to provide for this University.
A common misconception among students is they only deliver our mail. That is far from the truth. The mailroom not only delivers packages to students, but they deliver mail to the entire campus. They deliver all departments their packages, letters, and paper.
When the mailroom opens at 8 a.m., they start on a run all over campus. This run stretches from Morosky Academic Center all the way to Recreation and Wellness Center. Student workers in the mailroom conduct this run. On these mail runs students deliver pounds of paper, athletic equipment, and mail with checks and important documents.
Faculty and staff at Gannon rely on the mailrooms services to get what they need to continue working as normal.
The mailroom is open from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. The mail room gets over 250 packages a day. Even with the start, they try to sort through the packages before students get to them. Often students will get notification about their packages arrival before the mail room sorts through all these packages.
With limited number of students workers and time during the day students should be more receptive to the struggles of the mailroom. They work harder than you can believe to make sure your packages are safe and accounted for.
After speaking with the director of the mailroom and press services, he says job is far more complicated than students know. Since the mailroom controls the flow and distribution of packages and other mail the director himself vows to students that he will keep everyone’s belongings safe. He holds a key separate from the University’s universal key, so he only has access to students ’packages. Staff in the mailroom go beyond to make sure our packages are secure.
Just because the mailroom closes at 4 p.m. does not mean that work has ended. The mailroom accounts for packages coming in later than their hours are open. For example, workers may have to take packages that are addressed to the wrong building and make sure they find their home. There is so much work going on behind the scenes that we take for granted.
Without the mailroom, the paper bins in the printers around campus would not get refilled, you will not receive that special gift you ordered for a friend, and the football team would not get their new equipment.
With all the mailroom for the university, it should receive more recognition from the Gannon community. Instead, they work day–in and day–out without much acknowledgement.
Understanding just how hard the mailroom works should be an eye–opener to students to just how impactful the mailroom’s influence is on campus.
