Erie, PA.—Gannon University’s campus was full of familiar faces last weekend during the Centennial Homecoming and Family Weekend. Old friends were reunited, trips back in time occurred and fond memories were shared as festivities took place across campus.
In this week‘s edition of The Roundtable, alumni were asked to share their favorite memories from their time at Gannon University.
John Guenther, class of 1966, reminisced on his early days at Gannon in his freshman dorm, Wehrle Hall, where he made his first friends on campus. He also recalls working in the cafeteria where he cleaned the pans after the food service workers had finished using them. “I think they used to have competitions to see who could burn the pans the most,” said Guenther. “They were always so hard to get clean, but I managed to get them back to their original state,” laughed Guenther.
He was also a brother of Delta Sigma Phi (Delta Sig), a fraternity on campus that still exists today. The advisor, Dr. Yehl, and his fellow brothers had a large impact on him and his experience with Gannon. Guenther lived in the Delta Sig house during his junior and senior years where many memories were made.
The last memory he shared with me was going to the basketball games. Guenther enjoyed being a part of the large crowds that would come to support the Gannon Men’s Basketball team.
“Gannon was a good college when I went there, and now it’s a great university,” said Guenther.
“My granddaughter now goes to the university, and I am proud of the education she is receiving there.”
Kelly (Fennessy) Meredith, class of 2008, shared that her favorite memories from her time at Gannon stem from The Gannon Knight Office and 90.5 WERG. Meredith served as the editor–in–chief at The Gannon Knight during her senior year. “Seeing the first issue in print during my senior year really made the editor–in–chief role real,” said Meredith.
She also acknowledged the radio show she co–hosted, where she went by the air name of Kelly Smooth. During her last show, Meredith and her co–host, Michael, made it an unforgettable shift by combining all of their favorite songs with their favorite segments for one last time.
The memories created at Gannon are one–of–a–kind. As alumni continue to walk through Gannon campus, the special moments, and good times flood back, reminding them of why they chose and love this university.
