Erie, PA.— The Gannon Golden Knights football team fell to the East Stroudsburg Warriors on Saturday at their annual Homecoming game. Gannon played from behind the entire game following a sluggish start, which resulted in a big first quarter deficit. The Warriors offense dominated, scoring on ten possessions with zero punts or turnovers.
The slow starts continued for the Golden Knights, who punted on their first two drives of the game. The Warriors offense would find success immediately with a 33–yard reception by Randy Fizer to set up East Stroudsburg in opponent territory. Deante Crawford would score the game’s opening touchdown. Following a three–and–out by Gannon, a 17–yard punt set up the Warriors with great field position.
Quarterback Sean McTaggart connected with Jaylen Andrews for a 27–yard touchdown to extend the lead. After trailing 14–0 midway through the first quarter, the Golden Knights hoped to swing the momentum. Everette Dingle intercepted quarterback Ty Hurst’s first pass of the drive. Just moments later, Harrison Susi scored an 11–yard rushing touchdown to extend the Warriors lead to 21.
Hurst’s pass to running back Tristen Kenan sparked Gannon’s first attempt at a comeback. The quarterback connected with receiver Donell Mason on a pivotal fourth down conversation. A 20–yard catch–and–run by Damario Moore scored the Golden Knights’ first touchdown of Homecoming Weekend.
Starting the second quarter with possession, East Stroudsburg immediately responded with a four–play 59–yard drive that culminated with a 23–yard touchdown catch by Beau Heyser to make it 28–6 Warriors. A promising drive by Gannon fell apart following penalties and a sack.
After starting near midfield, East Stroudsburg found another score with Jaylen Andrews’ second touchdown reception of the game to extend the lead to 29. Following another stalled drive by the Golden Knights, the Warriors added another touchdown before halftime. McTaggart threw his fourth touchdown of the game on the first play of the drive. Gannon added a field goal before the half and trailed 41–9.
Despite a quarterback switch entering the second half, East Stroudsburg’s offense continued to thrive. Quarterback Charlie McKee found Cam Burti for a 16–yard touchdown. Fortunately, the Golden Knights quickly responded with an eight–play drive capped off with Tristen Kenan’s 25–yard touchdown run to make it 48–15. A connection from McKee to Joey Wilkinson set up running back Ajani Walker’s four–yard touchdown run to extend the Warriors lead to 40.
Once again, the Golden Knights would respond quickly as their next drive was elevated by a 37–yard completion to James Faulkner to set up possession at East Stroudsburg’s 6–yard line. Hurst ran in the end zone on fourth down for another Gannon touchdown to make it 55–22.
The Warriors would operate run–heavy in the final quarter. A six play all–rushing drive capped off with Harrison Susi’s 31–yard rushing touchdown. After forcing a Gannon punt, East Stroudsburg’s Cade Sawyer would carry the ball seven times and record the final touchdown of the game.
The Golden Knights fell to the Warriors 69–22 on Homecoming Weekend. Despite the loss, a large crowd of Gannon families and fans cheered the team on all afternoon.
Gannon will take a road trip and face the Kutztown Golden Bears on Saturday, Sept. 20. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
