Erie, PA.— “He knelt to the ground and pulled out a ring and said, ‘Marry me [Taylor Swift].”
Taylor Swift’s “Love Story” is finally coming true. On August 26, 2025, Travis Kelce proposed to Taylor Swift, resulting in a wave of reactions from people all over the world. But were all the reactions positive ones? Many of Taylor’s fans appeared to be happy that the 32-year-old icon’s love story was finally coming true, but there was some controversy following the musician’s proposal.
While the internet buzzed with engagement opinions, some Gannon Community members didn’t seem to feel the hype.
In this week’s edition of the Roundtable, three students were asked to share their thoughts on the newly announced engagement.
Wyatt Foster, a freshman physical therapy major, shares that this news does mean much to him. “Personally, I am not very excited about it because I don’t know either of them, so it does not affect me,” said Foster. However, many of his friends and family are excited about the proposal because they are fans of Taylor Swift and/or Travis Kelce.
Foster also shares, “I figured it was going to happen sooner rather than later, because they have been together for a while now, and I also figured it would happen because Travis Kelce probably won’t be in the NFL much longer.” He feels that it made sense for Kelce to propose now, towards the end of his career, because he is still making a high wage in the NFL.
Similarly, Brianna Barr, a senior criminal justice major, also has strong feelings towards the proposal. “To me, both Taylor and Travis are the pyramid schemes persona-fied versions of a professional athlete and singer,” said Barr. “I like to classify their relationship and marriage as solely PR, especially when Taylor described it as people’s favorite English teacher and gym teacher getting married.”
Barr also states that her feelings towards the proposal come from a dislike of Taylor Swift, and possibly some bias towards Jason Kelce being the superior Kelce brother as she is an Eagles fan. She wraps up her statement by emphasizing her belief that their relationship is a PR scheme, and that “the girl on the bleachers finally got her quarterback.”
Anna Malinowski, a senior public relations and public service and global affairs double major, shared her thoughts, also from a public relations standpoint. “Given that many of her songs have been about relationships and heartbreak, I’m happy that she’s entering this new stage in life,” said Malinowski. “However, I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of this has to do with publicity and gaining the attention of the media. I don’t think their relationship is necessarily a PR stunt, but I do think a lot of what she does revolves around grabbing the attention of the media and her fans.”
The emotions surrounding Taylor and Travis’ engagement are only going to get higher as more details unfold about their wedding and the big day gets closer.
