Erie, PA. — One of Gannon’s own is rising in the broadcasting world. Erie Otters color commentator and former Golden Knight Trevor Kubeja was named lead broadcaster for the club following the departure of play-by-play broadcaster Shawn Bednard effective on April 28th. He becomes the 7th ‘Voice’ in team history following Bednard and the great Aaron Cooney, who broadcasts for the American Hockey League.
Kubeja, who currently holds the title of Media & Communications Coordinator, will now play a larger role in the largest radio broadcast network in the Ontario Hockey League according to the Otters website.
“I am extremely humbled and grateful for the opportunity to be the Voice of the Otters. I have been blessed with a fantastic mentor in Shawn Bednard and have had a blast working with him over the past few seasons and am incredibly proud of what we were able to do.” said Kubeja from the Otters official statement.
Kubeja is only 22 years old, but he isn’t new to the screen. Under Kubeja’s leadership, Gannon’s radio network 90.5 WERG won multiple national awards. He also hosted the show “Prime Time Sports Guys” inviting sports personalities. Kubeja has been apart of the Otters organization since 2021-22 when he received media credentials.
He interned with the team as a junior and became the home color commentator ahead of the 2023-24 season. This season, Kubeja served full-time along with Bednard in the broadcast booth. Gannon students, staff, and alumni can listen to Kubeja on the call when the Erie Otters take the ice this fall.
