Erie, PA. – Gannon University has four fraternities and four sororities. Delta Sigma Phi was founded first on May 9, 1954. Alpha Gamma Delta followed their lead being the first sorority at Gannon. The other three fraternities, Delta Chi, Pi Kappa Alpha, and Tau Kappa Epsilon are well established organizations on campus. Additionally, the other three sororities at Gannon, Alpha Sigma Alpha, Alpha Sigma Tau, and Sigma Sigma Sigma are home to many students.
Recruitment for these organizations happens every fall and spring for students of all ages. This spring the sororities and fraternities, also known as FSL, welcomed new members with open arms. These organizations reported 30-60 students into each of their chapters.
The sorority and fraternity life opens your eyes to new experiences and connections with so many different people. Gannon’s sororities and fraternities add a sense of community and belonging to many students. These organizations foster a sense of support academically and personally for all members. Victoria Wheeler, a new member of Alpha Gamma Delta, expressed her extreme excitement and gratitude to be accepted into their sorority.
She said “The atmosphere is warm, welcoming, and full of laughter with a group of girls I can trust. I feel an overwhelming sense of support either for my academics or sport. The girls always have my back and push me to my greatest potential.”
Wheeler emphasized that she has found a new forever family with the girls as part of Alpha Gamma Delta. The bond within your own sorority or fraternity is profound. Also, students at Gannon have found bonds just as special with people from other FSL organizations. All Greek organizations support each other.
Lexa Yankauskas, a sophomore a part of Alpha Gamma Delta noted fraternities and sororities both help with creating an inviting environment for college students.
She expressed that “College can be a hard place to find your people. Fraternity and sorority life allow for so many involvement and leadership opportunities that help make Gannon feel more like home!”
Gannon’s fraternities and sororities are also strong pillars of their community. Both organizations have heavy involvement with philanthropic work. According to Gannon’s website, in the 2023-2024 academic year FSL organizations donated over $15,000 and completed 5,400 hours of service to the Erie Community. FSL organizations work with several non-profit organizations such as Fighting Hunger. Most of the money they make from fundraisers and service opportunities is paid back to the non-profit organizations they support.
The social aspect of FSL organizations can never be overlooked. Last week, sororities and fraternities celebrated Omega week. This week helps to build their sense of community within each other. Omega week is a fun and engaging time for new and current members of FSL organizations. From GUFSL trivia to bubble soccer, to volleyball there is a wide range of activities for all to have fun. While many have noted this week is busy, they leave feeling more connected with their new sisters and brothers.
Many events for these FSL organizations are coming soon. Events such as Feast of Roses, Mr. and Mrs., and Formal are coming up. These events are a combination of fun times, celebrating organization and personal accomplishments, and sharing memories within each chapter. Anyone can share this unspeakable bond at Gannon University. These organizations are a chance to create a home away from home.
