Erie, PA— Gannon University is home to over 2,000 students at any given time of year. Within this student body, a variety of different people exist. We are united through our pursuit of education at Gannon University. However, our differences may lie in our ages, career choices, races, faiths, or a plethora of other things. In every aspect that we are different, there is one where we are similar. In Roundtable, we explore the similarities and differences in the thoughts and opinions of Gannon students.
Sometimes, the things people wish they could change about the world can feel overwhelming. Whether it be little things, like a hard class or a rude co-worker, or the bigger issues that have plagued the world for centuries, what would you choose if you could change just one thing about the world?
This week, three students were asked, “If you could change one thing about the world, what would it be?”
Hallie Kirsten, a first-year biology major, studying in Gannon’s pre-dental medicine program, wishes the world could have more unity. She explains, “It would be really nice if everyone could come together instead of thinking that our differences make us so different.”
Meanwhile, Lily Schachner, a sophomore physician’s assistant major, says that she wishes there was a way to, “Probably just a way to stop war, I think. I just feel like with all the different countries, everybody has an idea of why they need to have war, and if everyone could just get on the same page, I feel like it would prevent a lot of deaths and things that we have going on like that.”
Brooke Cain, pre-pharmacy major in her first-year answers, “I’m a really big person on character. I know it’s a complicated thing to change but I think that if everyone in the world just had a better moral compass, I’m really big on being kind to strangers, giving someone the time of day if they need it. It just really bothers me when people are unnecessarily mean or just not friendly.”
She adds, “I’m a very overly friendly person, so I think if everyone was just a little bit nicer, if everyone was just a little bit kinder, the world would be a much better place.”
If you could change just one thing about the world, what would it be? For these Gannon students, it seems the desire for more kindness and unity is the prevalent wish.
