Erie, Pa. —The Gannon Golden Knights women’s basketball team performed at peak efficiency Saturday night in an upset win over No. 5 Seton Hill. Maddy Wheatley, a redshirt junior shooting guard, scored a career–high 25 points in the 89–75 win as Gannon improved to an 18–3 record.
In the first quarter, the Golden Knights were unstoppable starting the game with a 15–4 run. Lead by Wheatley and Kate Ratliff, the dominant offense hit 9/13 on field goals and 4/5 on free throws. During the period, Gannon did not allow any three pointers to be made and held Seton Hill to only eight points.
Entering the second quarter with a 15–point lead, Gannon would keep the momentum. After hitting back–to–back 3–pointers to start the period, Carissa Dunham would add a pair of her own to extend the lead to 42–17 midway through. Wheatley’s 15 points in the second quarter would boost the team to a 55–28 halftime lead in a game that looked all but over.
During the third quarter, a shot by Taylor Ethridge extended the lead to 34 points, the Golden Knights’ biggest advantage of the game. Seton Hill still had some fight left in them clawing back with a 7–2 run and ending the quarter with back–to–back three pointers.
An 8–0 run for the Griffins, including two three pointers by Hallie Cowan, entering the fourth quarter cut the deficit to 21 points. It would be a career game for Cowan as she carried Seton Hill with a remarkable 23 points in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, it would be too late for her squad as the Golden Knights would hold on for the 89–75 upset win in an extraordinary performance.
Four players scored double digits for Gannon in the team’s highest scoring effort of the season. These teams will rematch on Saturday March 1st in Erie, Pa. for the final regular season game of the 2024–2025 season. Next up is a road battle against the California (Pa.) Vulcans on Saturday February 1st at 1:00PM.
