Erie, Pa, –The Gannon Golden Knights Women’s basketball team earned a well–deserved victory on the road Monday night after overcoming numerous obstacles ahead of the game. Due to the lake effect snowstorm that has affected Pennsylvania and New York, it would be a challenge for the team to make it to Buffalo for the contest. After the game was delayed from Sunday to Monday, Gannon entered the game versus D’Youville without three starters making a difficult week even more arduous.
The Golden Knights got off to a hot start scoring the game’s first eight points. But the Saints would come marching tying the game and staying neck–to–neck throughout the first quarter. A pair of D’Youville three throws narrowed Gannon’s led to one after one quarter of play. Gannon would again have an explosive start to the quarter. The Golden Knights scored the first ten points of the second quarter to extend the lead to 11. Guard Olivia Cernuto would score five of those points. Gannon would end the half with back–to–back three pointers to lead 37–14 at break.
It would be a highly defensive third quarter as both teams failed to score more than eleven points. After a mostly even period, the Golden Knights would lead by 15 entering the final quarter of play.
Looking to hold its firm lead, Gannon would finish off strong in the fourth quarter. It was a two–woman show as Bri Claxton and Mia Slater combined for all 15 of Gannon’s fourth quarter points. The Golden Knights would leave D’Youville with a 63–44 win to improve to 10–1 on the season.
Despite missing three starters, Claxton and Slater stepped up. Claxton continued her impressive season with 27 total points while Slater would record a career–high 17 points in the win. Gannon would make ten three pointers while holding the Saints to only two.
The Golden Knights will finish the road trip with a game in Mansfield on Friday and in Shippensburg on Saturday before returning home on December 17th for a battle against Shepard.
