Erie, Pa.– Hurricane Helena has been ravaging many of the southern states surrounding the Gulf of Mexico since September 26.
Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Florida have been declared in states pf emergencies. Gannon’s own Ruskin campus has decided to hold classes virtually until the hurricane passes to ensure the safety of all.
In 2022 Gannon University had activated the Hurricane Relief Fund, which has plans to assist hurricane victims, specifically within the Gannon Community. This fund also is to be distributed among other community partners such as Catholic Charities, United Way, and American Red Cross.
This fund is being reactivated during these troubling times in hopes to help contribute to the safety and recovery of those being affected by Hurricane Helene as her attacks continue.
The hurricane is reported to be strengthening in the Caribbean Sea and is set to impact the Gulf Coast. So far Helene is the eighth named storm and the fifth hurricane of the Atlantic hurricane season.
Helene is expected to reach Florida’s Big Bend region as a Category 3 and is expected to impact Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, and the Carolinas.
It has been reported that there have been more than 150 casualties. With hundreds of people still missing because of the hurricane. Parts of North Carolina have been devastated, with entire communities destroyed. Many are without power ranging from Florida to Virginia.
President Joe Biden is set to visit North Carolina. Vice President and Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris will visit Georgia and Republican nominee Donald Trump has also visited Georgia.
