Erie, pa., September 17, 2024/Midnight – The Presidential debate took place on September 10, 2024, between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris and was held at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. The debate lasted 90 minutes and covered topics of the economy and the cost of living, abortion, immigration and the border, healthcare, fracking, and much more.
David Muir and Linsey Davis from ABC news were the moderators for the debate between the former president and the current vice president, making sure to give both candidates recognition before the debate began.
David Muir began the debate with the issue that voters have repeatedly stated is the number one issue– the economy and the cost of living.
Vice President Harris stated that she would like to put into action a plan that she calls “the opportunity economy.” Allowing low-income citizens, a chance to get back on their feet. Harris also mentioned her opponent and how his plan is to continue to provide a tax cut for billionaires and big corporations.
Former President Trump had time to respond with his own plan of action. He stated that the plan is to put tariffs on other countries so that the United States will finally receive payment for everything that has been done in the last 75 years. He even went on to state that he never had inflation like there is now.
Linsey Davis provided the next topic about the issue of abortion and each candidate gave their insights and plans if elected to office.
Trump did not provide a clear statement on what his stance on abortion was, but he did touch on the topic of having exceptions in place stating that he was much like former President Ronald Reagan in that way. The exceptions he provided in which abortion would be legal was rape, incest and the life of the mother. He also stated that there were concerns about babies being executed in the ninth month which was debunked by Davis.
Harris stated that when congress passes a bill to put back the protection of Roe v. Wade, as president she would sign it into law. She also gave input in the examples of why there should not be an abortion ban, stating that those who have been a survivor of a crime should have the right to decide on what happens to their body.
Muir kept the debate moving and asked the candidates their stances on immigration and their plans to prevent illegal border crossings.
Harris provided her plan which included the border security bill which would put into place 1,500 more border agents to guard the border to help those working overtime. Stating that this increase in agents would slow the flow of fentanyl coming into the United States. That the bill would have also prosecuted the transnational criminal organizations trafficking guns, drugs and human beings but that the bill was cut by Trump.
There was also a comment made from Harris about Trumps rallies and how participants would leave out of boredom. Harris commented that most of his talks are about fictional characters or how windmills cause cancer.
David Muir asked Trump why he tried to kill the bill but there was no direct response to the question, but Trump did comment on his rallies being labeled as boring stating that people don’t even go to her rallies, that there is no reason to go.
Trump stated that the reason his rallies are the biggest in the history of politics is because the people want their country back. That the country is lost and a failing nation due to allowing of millions of people into the country.
Trump also talked about that in Springfield there are people coming in and supposedly eating pets of people who live there. Stating that this country will become Venezuela on steroids if Harris becomes president.
Davis moves the conversation forward to the topic of values and the question arose on if Harris’s values had changed. Harris stated that her values have not changed because of her background and the life she grew up in.
Trump did not provide his values, but he did touch on his background as well mentioning that he used what his father provided for him and how he built it into many billions of dollars.
As for closing remarks, Harris stated that her focus is on the future and that Trump is focused on the past. She also stated that she would be the
For Trumps closing statement he took the opportunity to throw out his final negative comments about the vice president stating that she is the “worst vice president in the history of our country.”
