Erie, Pa., –The Pride Knights Mixer allowed students who identify with the LGBTQ+ community and others to feel safe around campus. This event presented bridges to connect those to resources on campus, but there can still be more.
Safe Zones have recently been the subject for those on campus who are looking for a place for them to feel accepted for who they are with those who have taken the time to complete the trainings to learn about LGBTQ+ identities, gender, sexuality, and examine prejudice, assumptions, and privilege. This curriculum has been utilized by over 25,000 educators in 100 countries and the numbers are growing.
Many of the faculty and a select number of students have participated in the Safe Zone Training that has recently been presented to students across campus who are a part of the LGBTQ+ community and allies.
Several Resident Assistants were the first group of students who received the training. The training was presented by Dr. Megan Woller (Director of Liberal Studies and Associate Professor of Fine Arts and Music), Tori Williams (Assistant Director of Campus Engagement and Activities), and Heidi Noyes (Director of Commuter Life) all of which have taken the training themselves.
“I think it will bring a sense of support knowing that there are individuals on campus who are easily identified as a resource,” says Noyes regarding what having safe zones more available on campus will and can do for the student body in general. “Just seeing the stickers around campus brings a sense of security for some which is so powerful!”
As for where to find these Safe Zones, the stickers can be found on the doors of faculty and staff, and soon students across Gannon’s campus. The sticker is a circle stating that the person behind that door is Safe Zone Trained and is there as a resource to those who need it.
These individuals are communicating with this sticker that they are open to talking about and being supportive of the LGBTQ+ community.
“Just seeing the stickers around campus brings a sense of security for some which is so powerful!” – Noyes
“Anybody who wants the content we’re open to have you be present.” Aly Eagle on who can participate in Safe Zone Training.
All are welcome to ensure that every student on campus feels loved and cared for.
