Don Sherman inducted into Gannon Hall of Fame as water polo kicks off inaugural Swim-A-Thon

ERIE, Pa, January 25, 2023– Don Sherman, the man who made water polo a varsity sport at Gannon University for men and women, is now inducted in the Gannon Hall of Fame.
This will be the start of a big weekend for the water polo program as they will also participate in their first ‘Swim-A-Thon’ with a goal of raising $5,000.
Sherman’s induction is set to take place on Saturday, January 28, 2023. The inductees of this year’s class will be honored at the basketball game taking place at 3pm. Additionally, there will be a hall of fame reception taking place after the game at 5pm (registration required).
In 2001, Sherman was intricate in moving Gannon’s water polo program from a club program to a varsity sport for both men and women. His 14-year tenure with the women and 12 years with the men provided Sherman with a number of accolades. 137 career victories for the men and a whopping 175 wins as the women’s head coach.
Sherman won Collegiate Water Polo Association Western Division Women’s Coach of the Year twice with the women.
The women were 9-1 at the CWPA Division II Championships with Sherman at the helm. He also received CWPA Division II Men’s Water Polo Championship Coach of the Year in 2014. Sherman stepped down as coach in 2015.
Sherman was inducted into the Erie County Aquatics Hall of Fame in 2017,
The 28th is already being a big day for Gannon’s water polo programs but now it is going to be even bigger as Gannon water polo is hosting its first ever annual Swim-A-Thon.
The program looks to raise $5,000 to fund team expenses. It looks to travel to California annually to compete and this fundraiser will have a lot to with that.
At 10AM on January 29th, the women’s team will swim laps for 20 minutes, do jugs for 10 minutes, and shoot at the goal for 10 minutes. At 10:45AM the men’s team will do the same.
Donors can choose to sponsor a swimmer in how many laps/jugs/goals the do as well as make a flat donation.
