Schuster Theatre holds “Next to Normal” Auditions Monday

Erie, Pa, January 26, 2023 — Gannon University’s Schuster Theatre will hold auditions for the spring musical, “Next to Normal,Monday, January 30th. The show comes as the newest addition to the 2022-2023 Season, with performances of “Forever Plaid and Dusk” occurring in February.

“Next to Normal” will offer performers the opportunity to explore challenging roles in a dramatic production.

The show debuted in 2009, to a myriad of nation critical acclaim and won three Tony awards.. The storyline focuses on a seemingly ordinary American family, consisting of two teenage children, a mother and father. While appearing to be a “normal” loving family, the group faces the family dynamic is challenging and the mother suffers from manic depression. The energetic pop-rock musical offers insight to the dark difficulties of psychiatric health. And family relationships

The show’s director, Angela Howell, says that the show was chosen largely due to its focus on mental health. “It deals with the effects of a mother’s mental illness on her family, so we wanted to place it as close to mental health awareness month as the semester would allow” Howell states.

Howell also believes the show will offer challenging opportunities in vocals and acting for cast members.

Gannon and Erie communities can expect to see performances of “Next to Normal” from April 2029. at the Schuster Theater 620 Sassafras St. Erie, PA 16501
