Sigma Tau Delta to host Valentine’s Day event
English Honors Society having a ‘Blind Date with a Book’ sale this week
February 9, 2022
Have any Valentine’s Day plans? Sigma Tau Delta, Gannon University’s English Honors Society, does.
Sigma Tau Delta is a small community on campus, reflecting its broader home in the English department, which is composed of some individuals who wouldn’t mind spending the day of love curled up with a good book rather than a partner.
So, to ensure every student has the chance to receive a Valentine’s Day gift, the co-ed fraternity has decided to host a “Blind Date with a Book” event leading up to and on Monday to celebrate the sweet day.
The books will be for purchase, at $3 per book, from a wide variety of authors and genres, making it the perfect gift for a beloved reader in your life or a perfect treat for yourself.
This sale will serve as a fundraiser event for the club and will help it budget and plan for future events.
An example of this funding is the CHESS Speaker Series event hosted by Sigma Tau Delta in October, where the fraternity invited “Frenemies” speakers to discuss political polarization and respectful conversations of disagreement.
Looking forward, this book-date fundraiser will help the English honor society sponsor the visit of an award-winning author in March, and beyond this year, more social and service events on campus for students.
For those unfamiliar with blind dates with a book, popularized on do-it-yourself, or DIY, pages on Pinterest, books are wrapped and briefly described, without revealing the title, author or cover, furthering the “don’t judge a book by its cover” trope and adding a fun element of surprise to the book sale.
The “Blind Date with a Book” event will be scattered in popular English-loving buildings, Nash Library and Palumbo Academic Center, beginning at the end of this week.
Thursday, the event will pop up on the first floor of Palumbo from 10 a.m. to noon.
In preparation for Valentine’s Day weekend, Anna Brink, chapter president, and Ali Smith, chapter vice president, will be posted on the first floor of Palumbo from 10 a.m. to noon Friday.
Monday, which happens to be Valentine’s Day, the fraternity will celebrate the holiday in Nash Library with the sale from 1:45 p.m. to 4 p.m.
For more about this event or events in the future, or how to get involved with Sigma Tau Delta, students may contact chapter adviser Douglas King, Ph.D., or Brink via Gannon email.
