The Gannon University women’s soccer team’s run in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Tournament ended in overtime Thursday, as the No. 6 seeded Knights fell 2-1 to third-seed Bloomsburg in a first-round match at Beckley, W. Va.

Gannon got off to a fast start in its tournament opener, as less than five minutes into the match, Sarah Fails found the back of the net to give the Knights a 1-0 lead.

It wasn’t until a few minutes before half that Bloomsburg evened it up on a penalty kick courtesy of Natalie Holmes.

After that the Knights and Huskies fought back and forth to try and take the lead and send themselves to the Atlantic Regional semifinal.

Finally, with just a few minutes left in overtime, Bloomsburg’s Abby Groff sent her teammates into hysterics and the Huskies to the regional semifinal Saturday by putting a shot past Knights’ goalie Kennedy Solymosi.

Bloomsburg finished with a 17-11 edge in shots and Solymosi wound up with six saves for Gannon.

Gannon’s season ends at 12-4-3.
