Frenemies: How to Interact with Those we Love but Disagree With

The next event in Gannon’s College of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences’ fall 2021 speaker series, titled “Reinventing Right Now” will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday.

The event, which will be held in the Yehl Ballroom, is titled “Frenemies: How to Interact with Those We Love but Disagree With” and features Berny Jacques and Geston Pierre, who have been friends since middle school.

Jacques and Pierre are both children of Haitian immigrants who fled their country due to political instability and fear for their families’ lives.

Despite their shared family backgrounds, the two clash on almost everything, from political issues to social issues in the United States.

Through their discourse, Jacques and Pierre show their audiences how people who disagree greatly on multiple issues can maintain friendships

Food as Healing with Shane Bernardo

Shane Bernardo, co-founder of “Food As Healing,” an organization based in Detroit, will teach the Gannon community about the importance of food in healing at 3 p.m. on Oct. 28.

Bernardo will emphasize the importance of creating local food systems and sustainable foodways in the realm of food justice.

It seeks to find how cultivating, celebrating and practicing food-based rituals nourishes people intellectually, emotionally and spiritually in ways that typical comfort foods cannot.

Those in attendance will learn how reclaiming a sense of tradition, culture, identity and ancestry can root movements centered on healing and increase human capacity to resist and push forward.

The event will take place in the third floor open space of the Palumbo Academic Center

Unpredictability and Presence in Creative Action

Master Papermaker Ashley Pastore and Printmaker Alex Anthes will be featured in this event from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Nov. 6.

The event will take place at the Grounded Print Shop, located at 1902 Cherry St.

Pastore and Anthes will share their artistic philosophy and show their work to the audience.

They will highlight the importance of “being present” through creative action in the form of printmaking to counter the unpredictability of life.

After they demonstrate printmaking, Pastore and Anthes will lead a workshop with up to 20 participants. Registration for this porton is required.

Participants will create a print on the letterpress in the studio, as well as use the monotype process, which includes painting onto a sheet of plexiglass and then running the letterpress print.

Each participant will get to keep a copy of the print they make.

All are welcome to attend the talk and watch the demonstration, both of which are free. The printmaking workshop, however, costs $5 per person and requires registration prior to the event.
