Progress report for Gannon sports: Sept. 22 – Oct. 5

Football (2-3): After a blowout 56-21 win over Clarion during Homecoming weekend, the Knights traveled to Indiana, Pa., to take on the Crimson Hawks, losing a close game 28-23.
Quarterback Kory Curtis had a solid performance, completing 18-of-35 passes for 263 yards and two touchdowns.
Meanwhile, running back Melvin Blanks helped guide the offense, rushing for 63 yards and scoring two receving touchdowns.
The defense also turned in a stellar performance with linebacker Trey Baker recording 14 tackles while Tre McNeill recorded 10 tackles.
Sitting at 1-1 in PSAC West play, the Knights return home to face the California, Pa., Vulcans at noon Saturday at McConnell Family Stadium.
Women’s volleyball (15-2): The Gannon women’s volleyball team continued its winning ways, winning its last five matches to improve to a winning percentage of .882.
Over the course of the past few matches, the team has been led by seniors Lauren Sampson and Ashley McClung, who each have 166 and 121 kills, respectively.
Meanwhile, senior Ashley Beyers leads the team with 558 assists, while freshman Emma Hall and Sampson have 24 and 23 service aces, respectively.
Hall also leads the team with 229 digs while junior Maggie Greenfield leads the team with 41 blocks.
The Knights, after defeating Edinboro Tuesday night, will next face Mercyhurst at 7:05 p.m. Friday.
The game will be at Mercyhurst.
Men’s water polo (5-3): After a rough start to the season, the men’s water polo team has rebounded nicely and is currently on a three-game winning streak, having beaten Salem and Washington & Jefferson Sept. 25 and beating McKendree Saturday.
In its most recent win, Gannon had nine different players score at least one goal, including seniors Drago Marjanovic and Tony Squeglia and junior Vlad Mickic.
The Knights will next travel to O’Fallon, Illinois, where they will participate in the CWPA Weekend tournament; the Knights will once again face Mercyhurst and McKendree Saturday and Salem Sunday.
Athlete awards & recognitions: Senior Taylor Lewis of the women’s soccer team and sophomore Tinashe Katsande of the men’s soccer teams were named Gannon University’s Athletes of the Week for week five of the 2021-2022 athletics season.
