“Euphoria,” a show about a teenage drug addict, Rue, working through her sobriety, sexuality and teenage drama at once, has been a hit since its release on the HBO Max streaming service in 2019.
The series is loosely based upon an Israeli miniseries and follows the same themes about teenage life.
As much as many people adored the openness and forwardness the series brings, others condemned HBO and the associated actors for portraying such an explicit experience of young high schoolers. They were not in favor of the station suggesting that this behavior is similar to teenage reality and feared it may be encouraging this kind of behavior amongst young viewers.
In reality, though, as is common with many other television series, like “Law and Order: Special Victims Unit” for example, the lifelike events portrayed are often dramatized for the sake of entertainment and views, which is the understood vantage point of the most appreciative viewers of “Euphoria.”
Since end of season one, which ended with a massive clffhanger, fans have been craving more from the series, especially as it stars hit actress and artist Zendaya.
Two special episodes have been released to hold fans over until season two comes out, serving as a bridge between the two seasons.
The first is all about Rue, who is played by Zendaya, and the second is about Jules’ story. Jules is Rue’s best friend who also happens to have her fair share of issues and trauma, and is also open about her trans-journey with her closest friends, which adds a progressive element to the series.
These two episodes utilized only as many cast and crew members as was necessary, allowing the show to be filmed as safely and as efficiently as possible during the pandemic.
A second season of the series has been confirmed by HBO, but an official release date has not been announced due to the impact of COVID-19 on the production process. Originally intended to be released in late 2020, the second season may be pushed back to the latter half of 2021.
Zendaya and the rest of the cast and crew agreed that they wanted to create a season they are proud of while also being safe, so they have been holding off until conditions are a bit more feasible.
Production for the new season began in March 2020, but the team has to take its time and be cautious during the whole process to keep it stars and its production team safe.
Season two will also feature a few new characters, but the actors to play them or explicit details have yet to be released.
